ÉRIC ROUX FONTAINE: rare artist

 

Painter, nomad, poet, photographer, and videographer, he wanders at the edges of forgotten worlds with his insatiable curiosity. He oscillates between the imaginary of territories and the territories of the imaginary. A tightrope walker between words and images, between brushes and cameras, he embraces everything, to help us pierce the mysteries of the cosmos.

Éric Roux-Fontaine advocates for a sensitive, generous painting, counter-current, as an act of poetic resistance. He seeks to illustrate Nature, to uncover its buried beauty. Sometimes, he reveals cracks often related to the human condition, and perhaps he approaches the invisible?

A great lover of curiosities, he collects masks, rare objects, ancient books, scientific instruments, puppets, tribal artifacts… This abundant imagination infuses his work. He also works as a set designer for the theater, which reinforces the “staging” character of his canvases, often constructed like living tableaux where each element tells a secret story.

He signs an “intuitive” painting where memory, instinct, inner journey, and daydreaming guide each of his gestures.

The artist who likes to “filter” the world immerses himself with strength and without restraint to enter into painting, body and soul. For him, to paint is to work one’s gaze differently, to preserve all its sharpness.

 Technically, he demonstrates perfect mastery of drawing, material, and transparencies. He often uses glazes, overlays, and complex textures that give his paintings a sensory and emotional depth.

His many travels around the world (Central and South America, Cuba, India, Balkans, …) deeply nourish his art. However, his travel notebooks allow for some digressions. They do not faithfully reflect his experiences on site. He notes or sketches fragments of sensations, visions, dreams. Upon returning, he paints “mental places,” landscapes of the soul. He retraces “the aftermath, the backlash,” what remains inhabited by nostalgia, magnificence, and strangeness.

As soon as he finished his studies at the Beaux-Arts, he hit the road in search of Gypsy & Romani cultures around the world, in Poland, Romania, Bosnia, France, up to northern India, the historical starting point of the Rom populations. From these first travels, several collaborations will arise with writers like Rajko Djuric, co-screenwriter of Time of the Gypsies by Emir Kusturica, and musicians like Thierry Robin.

 

 

Even today, he continues to visit remote places. The reminiscences of his many explorations make him inexhaustible his primary and foundational source of inspiration.

After several collaborations including FÉERIC and WONDERLAND for ARTIST, Brigitte and François remain literally captivated by the universe of Éric Roux-Fontaine. Meeting him to imagine a new clothing collection always brings them jubilant and collective pleasure. His subjects, themes, and interests are also theirs. Everything converges towards the enchantment of shared tastes. An artistic and human encounter that has lasted for almost 15 years, as strong as it is simple and natural.

 Many European and American galleries exhibit him. Recognized by prestigious institutions, his works are also included in several private and public collections around the world. His influence reaches an international and diverse audience.
