NEW WAVE

When ARTIST and GUILLAUME PATUREL interpret with the hands of the heart

The journey of the Marseille artist Guillaume Paturel defies any attempt at labeling. He began his career with classical painting and collage of illustrations, but very quickly, he explored other fields such as furniture and scenography. At just 22 years old, he simultaneously obtained his diploma from the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille and the École d'Architecture in Paris la Villette.

Talented and multidisciplinary, unclassifiable, Guillaume has made several short films that have been recognized at prestigious festivals. His early works include "Baie des singes" in 1992 and "Trop long" in 1993. In 1996, he directed his first feature film "D'un jour à l'autre". Then, in 2000, he shot a trilogy in New York, "NYC III", selected in various international festivals.

The rise of the virtual world, the Internet, and Google Maps has allowed him to merge his two passions, aesthetic creation and architecture. He has notably contributed to major urban projects in Saudi Arabia and Kazakhstan.

"20 years later, Guillaume sets aside the digital and returns to the essence of his artistic soul: painting and collages. He reconnects with raw materials to once again feel the true textures, to speak again the luminous language of true colors, to redeem the world through the beauty of gesture."

"After completing more than 3,000 digital architectural image projects, the artist moved to New York in 2006 and worked on ambitious programs, including a virtual illustration of the new design of the World Trade Center."

"Today, he works in Gowanus, a historic industrial neighborhood in Brooklyn, where its ever-changing urban environment fuels his fertile inspiration."

'The study of plans for his work as an architect and the daily observation of the ballet of cranes deeply mark him and guide his creative approach.'

He developed his new form of art, which corresponds to who he is today: powerful paintings, created on wood and canvas, heavy, difficult to handle, almost like sculptures. Large formats immediately established themselves, the making of the frames is also part of the creative process, just like the fatigue.

In reality, the painting begins already in the warehouses, when he goes there to choose the size of the boards. His relationship with painting is primarily physical and instinctive.

"It is mainly the neighborhood he walks through every day to get to the studio that influences him. A true urban collage, a mix of small houses and construction zones, a concrete factory adjoins his workshop. One can see a procession of raw materials contributing to the city's expansion, and then, a few blocks away, cranes sorting through mountains of waste and metal. They build, they demolish, and they rebuild. It has become his essential subject."

'His pieces are cities, deserted or changing territories, under construction.'

In the end, what could show plans reveals urban landscapes with multiple dreamlike spires. An overflowing dynamic scatters fluid whirlpools, impetuous reefs, and organic cavities.

Fascinated by cities and their layouts, the urban dweller GUILLAUME PATUREL reclaims, sculpts the fabric of his environment, and drives the essence of movement.

"His painting cuts with a magnifying glass. With a knife, he digs the wood in its depth to bury the revival of raw wood, the buried elements of the painting somewhat like an archaeologist. With a scalpel, he chisels not so much to give different reliefs but to draw something from beneath."

By observing these works, ARTIST felt how the painter translates the memory and gesticulation of cities. This particularism, a true dialogue between architecture and art, offers an almost impressionistic technique. Filled with light, the whole exudes a charm and vivacity that perfectly respond to the spirit of the brand Art-à-Porter. On the porous base of the canvas, the forms in long strokes sometimes, the scratch here or there, and especially all these variations of pink and gray, particularly attracted Brigitte and François.

The painting that inspired ARTIST for their upcoming collection "LUMINESCENCE" was created in 2022. Wood and acrylic 1 m X 1.20 m.

J’adore les lire car les textes sont riches, superbement bien écrits et ils décrivent avec innovation et justesse des toiles qui ne me paraissaient pas de prime abord si fantastiques que cela!
